This island is the economic heart of the New World, home to 1,500 Jornaleros and 4,200 Obreros. It has specialized in rum, coffee, celluloid, chili sauce, atole, felt, alpaca and oil extraction, becoming the colony’s industrial powerhouse. Yet prosperity is not its only ambition: amusement parks, a grand hacienda and magnificent promenades offer leisure, while a botanical garden within the old fortress walls and a museum on the peninsula preserve its cultural soul. Its centerpiece is a spectacular amphitheatre perched above the cliffs overlooking the great northern bay.
